Workplace Murders, Suicides, and Violence are Soaring

April 13, 2010
The Bureau of Labor Statistics has partial data for 2008 and no data yet for 2009. But the anecdotal evidence suggests workplace violence in 2009 is at a record pace as a result of the economic crisis and continuing recession.
Suicides at the workplace soared 28 percent from 196 in 2007 to 251 in 2008. Murders at the workplace have averaged 500 per year since 2003, but are expected to be higher in 2009. Workplace murder is the leading killer of working females, (35 percent of their fatal work injuries) and the second leading killer of males. And 95 percent of those committing suicide at work are males.
Non-fatal workplace violence continues to increase. But unlike the old weather adage, “everyone talks about it but no one does anything about it,” workplace violence is the opposite. No one is willing to publicly talk about it, but most organizations are moving quickly and aggressively to do something about it.
It is not safe outside, either. Companies with field employees such as utilities or construction workers are facing greater incidents of theft and/or violence toward their employees (among the most innovative solutions comes from DTE Energy).
Online training, helpline resources, escort services and security responses to any threat for investigation and mitigation are enabling organizations to reduce events. Greater use of identity management and access control systems, combined with surveillance and educating employees on where and how to get immediate help if they feel threatened or uncomfortable, are being implemented. False alarms are welcome. West Virginia SAC Launches New Website with Interactive Data Features
and Social Networking Links

March 12, 2010
The WV SAC, housed within the Division of Criminal Justice Services, recently launched its newly designed website. New to the site are interactive data features allowing users to obtain general crime information or query selected data sources for more detailed statistics. A county level map provides users with state and county level general crime statistics. In addition, the SAC has developed an interactive data analysis tool, called Project IDA, which allows users to query specific law enforcement and corrections data sources. Project IDA was designed to be a user-friendly interface for anyone to quickly obtain statistics specific to their needs. At present, users can obtain detailed statistics by querying offense, victim, and arrest segments from WV’s Incident-Based Reporting System (WVIBRS). Phase II of this project is underway and will make adult institutional corrections statistics available via DOC’s Inmate Management Information System (IMIS) and information on offenders serving time in WV’s community-based corrections programs via the Community Corrections Information System (CCIS) developed by the SAC in 2007, which received the JRSA’s Technical Innovation Recognition award in 2008. As always, all SAC publications continue to be available for download on the newly developed website.
In conjunction with the launch of the new website, the SAC has also joined the world of social networking to provide users with the most up-to-date crime and justice-related news, statistics, events, as well as training and funding sources. The SAC has newly developed Facebook and Twitter pages by which users can link to via the SAC’s website or visa versa. Through the use of email notifications, the SAC receives timely information from various federal and state agencies to pass along to Facebook fans and Twitter followers. The SAC is also making use of local newspaper and other media outlets, information from nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and other government agencies to identify and post crime and justice-related information and resources of interest to WV citizens and system stakeholders. This new networking will provide criminal justice professionals, professors and students, advocates, and others interested or involved in the criminal justice system with quick and reliable resources at their fingertips.
